Former Chicago Bears Legend Steve 'Mongo' McMichael Hospitalized for Medical Tests
HOMER GLEN, Ill. - Former Chicago Bears defensive tackle and NFL great Steve 'Mongo' McMichael has been hospitalized for medical tests, according to a statement released by his family on Wednesday afternoon.
The McMichael family requested prayers for the former football player, who is undergoing tests at the hospital. Steve McMichael played a remarkable 15 seasons in the NFL, spending 13 of those seasons with the Bears.
During his time with the Bears, McMichael established himself as an exceptional defensive tackle, accumulating a total of 92.5 sacks, which ranks him third all-time among NFL defensive tackles. The record is only surpassed by John Randle with 137.5 sacks and Aaron Donald with 111 sacks.
McMichael's outstanding performance was instrumental in the Bears' dominant 46 defense during their championship-winning 1985 Super Bowl season. Not only was he a force on the field, but he also demonstrated his durability by starting an impressive 191 consecutive games while wearing the Bears uniform – a franchise record that still stands today.
Following his successful playing career, McMichael ventured into professional wrestling, competing for both the WWF and WCW. His versatility and athletic prowess continued to shine in the wrestling ring.
Most recently, Steve McMichael celebrated a significant achievement as he was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio on February 8 of this year. Alongside another Bears legend, Devin Hester, he was honored for his exceptional contributions to the sport.
