Former Cincinnati Bengals first-round center Billy Price has announced his retirement from the NFL after undergoing emergency surgery to save his life this offseason. The 29-year-old revealed that he had a pulmonary embolism, which led to his decision to hang up his cleats.
Price took to Instagram to share the news, stating that on April 24th, he had emergency pulmonary embolism surgery to remove a saddle clot that was entering both of his lungs. As a healthy 29-year-old, the unprovoked occurrence of a pulmonary embolism was terrifying for Price, who expressed his gratitude for being alive today.
Unfortunately, the risk of an internal bleed while on blood thinners created tremendous risks for Price, resulting in his retirement from the NFL. Despite this, he expressed gratitude for the opportunity to have played in some of the greatest atmospheres around the world. Price also acknowledged his teammates who will continue to make Pro Bowls, All-Pro Rosters, and earn Hall of Fame recognition.
In a heartfelt message to his wife, Price acknowledged the role she played in his career, stating that it would not have been possible without her continued love and support. He expressed excitement about navigating the next chapter of life together and expanding their family.
Price, an Ohio State product, was selected by the Bengals with the No. 21 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. After three seasons in Cincinnati, he was traded to the New York Giants, where he played out the final year of his rookie contract. Price then spent the 2022 season with the Arizona Cardinals, starting in 11 games, before joining the Dallas Cowboys on their practice squad in 2023. Throughout his six-season career, Price played in a total of 69 games, with 45 starts.
While retiring from the NFL marks the end of his professional football journey, Price's decision highlights the importance of prioritizing one's health and well-being. As he embarks on the next chapter of his life, we wish Billy Price continued success and happiness.
