Massachusetts officials are investigating the cause of a fire that erupted in a North Shore apartment building on Easter morning, displacing over four dozen people. The Lynn Fire Department received multiple 911 calls reporting the fire at 167 Fairmount Ave., a four-story apartment building near the Saugus line, shortly before 9:45 a.m. on Sunday.
Upon arriving at the scene, firefighters from Lynn and Saugus encountered flames visible from the third- and fourth-floor porches, with the fire having spread to the attic. Lynn Fire Chief Dan Sullivan revealed that all but eight of the building's 49 units were occupied at the time of the fire.
One resident, Collette Whitcomb, shared her experience of quickly evacuating the building with her dog, initially underestimating the severity of the situation. However, upon stepping outside, she was met with a cloud of smoke. Thankfully, Whitcomb's boyfriend, a Saugus police officer, responded to the scene and safely rescued her cat from their apartment.
The flames were brought under control within one hour by the Lynn Fire Department, with firefighting crews remaining on-site for a few hours afterwards. Although the fire was contained to two units and a portion of the attic, extensive smoke and water damage affected the entire building.
Due to the water damage sustained by the building's electrical service, the Lynn Inspectional Services personnel restricted the entry of all 52 residents into the property. The duration of the displacement remains unknown at this time. While no civilians were injured, one firefighter sustained a minor injury.
Lynn resident Arthur Gerald expressed empathy for those affected by the fire, acknowledging the loss and devastation faced by individuals who lost their belongings and apartments. He emphasized the importance of gratitude for being alive and safe, mentioning that material possessions can be replaced.
The Lynn Fire Investigation Unit has taken charge of determining the cause of the fire, as authorities work diligently to find answers for the affected residents and ensure the safety of the community.
