FDA Expands Recall of Produce Shipped to Kentucky Following Listeria Contamination

In response to a potential listeria contamination, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has expanded a recall of bulk produce distributed from Wiers Farm, located in Ohio. The recall, which was initially limited to cucumbers, has now been broadened to include other produce items such as cilantro, green bell peppers, and more. This nationwide recall has specifically advised consumers to be cautious when purchasing produce from Walmart and Kroger.
The recall was prompted by an investigation conducted by the Ohio Department of Agriculture, which discovered a listeria contamination in a neighboring distributor. Furthermore, she highlights that medication can be used to treat listeria infection, but currently, the best approach is to avoid consuming any potentially dangerous foods.
Dr. Hood particularly urges those at high risk, including pregnant women, newborn babies, immunocompromised individuals, and the elderly, to exercise caution and refrain from consuming the recalled produce. These vulnerable populations are more susceptible to severe illness as a result of listeria contamination.
