Fans of the popular Netflix series, The Umbrella Academy, are expressing their outrage and disappointment with the recently released fourth and final season. The show, which had garnered acclaim for its first three seasons, has left viewers feeling let down and betrayed by what they see as a subpar conclusion to the beloved series.

Released on Thursday, August 8, the much-anticipated final batch of episodes has received harsh criticism from the show's dedicated fan base. Despite having a critical score of 61 percent on review aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes, the audience score sits at an abysmal 17 percent, reflecting the overwhelming dissatisfaction among viewers.

Social media platforms have become a hotbed of scathing comments and expressions of discontent. Fans have taken to Twitter and other platforms to voice their frustrations, with many questioning the quality of the writing and character development in the final season. One fan lamented, "What the hell happened?! The first three seasons were awesome. Was there a different writer or something? Terrible final season."

Another disgruntled viewer expressed their disappointment, stating, "Absolutely horrendous, wish I hadn't bothered watching. Commits total character assassination on characters that I've loved for years. Disgusted and disappointed."

Viewers have not shied away from denouncing the final season as one of the most disappointing show endings in history. Additionally, complaints have centered around the shortened run of only five episodes and what fans deemed as a "completely unnecessary" romance between characters Five and Lila, played by Aidan Gallagher and Ritu Arya. This particular storyline development, among others, has been deemed inconsistent with the trajectory of the characters throughout the previous seasons, leading many to feel that the show's essence was negated.

"We need an apology from The Umbrella Academy writers for whatever that atrocity is between Five and Lila... I'm cringing so hard right now," one confused viewer expressed. Another critique appeared on Twitter, stating, "Season four is not who they are and or ever were. I blame the horrible writing decisions that were made."

Interestingly, even cast member Dan Castañeda, who portrays Diego and is married to Lila in the series, expressed his displeasure with the storyline twist, stating, "I didn't understand. I was pissed off... I was angry. I talked to Steve [Blackman] a few times. I was like, 'Hey, does this really have to happen?'"

The Umbrella Academy, adapted by showrunner Steve Blackman from the comic book series written by Gerard Way, follows the trials and tribulations of a family of adopted sibling superheroes. The series, once praised for its unique storytelling and compelling characters, seems to have lost its way in its final season.

As fans continue to voice their disappointment and frustration, it remains to be seen how the producers and showrunners will respond to this wave of criticism. The Umbrella Academy's final season is now available for streaming on Netflix.
