During the 11-day extreme cold span, nearly 30 patients were treated for frostbite by doctors at the Grossman Burn Center, which is part of HCA Midwest Health, Kansas City's largest healthcare provider. Additionally, several others received treatment in their outpatient clinic.

Dr. Megan Garcia, the medical director of the Grossman Burn Center, stated that 12 patients had already undergone amputation surgeries primarily impacting their fingers and toes. Some of these patients were in attendance at the Chiefs vs. Dolphins game on January 13.

Hospital administration revealed that up to 70% of the frostbite patients treated may ultimately require amputations as their injuries progress. Patients are being closely monitored by specialized physicians and expert care teams to address their long-term needs. It is expected that more surgical procedures will be carried out over the next two to four weeks as their injuries evolve.

Frostbite, a condition that can occur within 30 minutes on exposed skin, poses a significant risk during extreme cold spells. Areas such as the nose, ears, cheeks, chin, fingers, and toes are particularly susceptible.
