### Eury Pérez Set to Rejoin Marlins Rotation Following Tommy John Surgery
The Miami Marlins are poised to reintegrate Eury Pérez into their pitching rotation as they face the Pittsburgh Pirates next week. Following a lengthy recovery from Tommy John surgery, the towering 6'8" right-handed pitcher is making his major league comeback since his 2023 rookie season. Pérez's return comes 14 months after his surgical procedure in April of the previous year.
Pérez initially made waves in the MLB when the Marlins promoted him in May 2023. At just 20 years old, he showcased an upper-90s fastball complemented by a robust mix of four pitches, all commanded with maturity uncommon for pitchers of his stature. His prowess was clear during his first stint, as he posted a solid 3.15 ERA across 19 starts. His ability to strike out nearly 29% of batters while maintaining a decent 8.3% walk rate affirmed his potential as a top-tier starter. Despite being held back occasionally to monitor his workload, Pérez made an impressive impact and secured a seventh-place finish in the NL Rookie of the Year voting.
Having spent the past several months in recovery and rehabilitation, Pérez made his way back to competitive play in late April. He began with a rehab assignment at Low-A Jupiter, making five short appearances before advancing to Triple-A Jacksonville. There, he accumulated more innings, culminating in an effective 2.13 ERA and striking out 15 batters over 12 1/3 innings. His fastball remained as potent as ever, averaging 97.8 MPH.
While Pérez's return is a boost for the Marlins, the rotation has encountered setbacks. Max Meyer was recently placed on the 15-day injured list due to a left hip impingement. Meyer's performance has been inconsistent, with his ERA ballooning and strikeout rate dropping significantly since May. His injury adds to the challenges the Marlins face as they strive to stabilize their pitching staff.
Sandy Alcantara, one of the Marlins' mainstays, took the mound in their latest game against the Rockies. Cal Quantrill is set to pitch in the series finale against Colorado, with Edward Cabrera, Ryan Weathers, and Alcantara lined up for the upcoming series against the Tampa Bay Rays. Pérez might make his return on Monday, or possibly Tuesday, to allow for an additional day of rest following his recent Triple-A appearance.
As the Marlins prepare to reintroduce one of their most promising talents, the team will need to shuffle their 40-man roster to accommodate Pérez's reinstatement. His return is eagerly anticipated, offering a potential boost to the rotation at a critical juncture in the season.
