In the latest development surrounding the Carolina Panthers' quarterback situation, ESPN NFL draft expert Mel Kiper Jr. has spoken out against the team's apparent dysfunction. Kiper voiced his concerns during an appearance on Get Up, highlighting what he sees as the mishandling of quarterback Bryce Young by the Panthers organization.
From the moment the Panthers selected Young as the first overall pick in the 2023 NFL draft, Kiper argued that the team had mishandled him. He pointed to the frequent turnover in the coaching staff and the significant overhaul in offensive game plans from last season to this season. Kiper suggested that the team's decision-making seemed to be driven by panic following the impressive start of rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud with the Houston Texans.
Another point of contention raised by Kiper was the lack of on-field opportunities given to Young during the preseason. He criticized the Panthers for not providing enough playing time for the young quarterback to adjust to the coaching strategies of head coach Dave Canales and offensive coordinator Brad Idzik.
"To blame this on Bryce Young is ridiculous," Kiper asserted. "The blame here goes to the organization, the owner, for mishandling this young quarterback."
It is worth noting that Young had some pre-draft concerns surrounding his smaller stature, standing at 5'10" and weighing 204 pounds. In a scouting report by Derrik Klassen for B/R, Young was compared unfavorably to Kyler Murray, with Klassen highlighting the Arizona Cardinals star's superior athleticism and stronger arm.
As the debate over the Panthers' handling of Bryce Young continues, fans and analysts alike will be closely watching how the team responds and whether any adjustments will be made to better nurture and develop their promising young quarterback.
