In an exciting development, tech enthusiasts have managed to backport Microsoft's Recall feature, announced during the May 20 event for Windows 11, onto existing low-powered Windows on ARM devices. Despite the official minimum requirement of 16GB RAM, users have successfully made Recall work on a relatively underpowered PC.
Albacore, known on Twitter as @thebookisclosed, recently shared their accomplishment, stating that they have successfully installed Recall on a low-end PC sporting a Snapdragon 7cx processor and 4GB of RAM. The 7cx chip, being an ARM-based processor lacking a built-in NPU, posed additional challenges. However, even with just 3.4GB of available memory, Albacore reported that Recall surprisingly works well on this setup.
Excited by the achievement, Albacore has promised to release a detailed guide soon, enabling owners of other Windows on ARM devices, such as the Surface Pro X, to also benefit from the Recall feature. While the process may prove more challenging on x86 machines due to the majority of ML models for developers being ARM64 packages, it is expected that Recall will eventually be made compatible with x86 devices as well.
The Recall feature has evoked mixed reactions from users. While the idea of Windows 11 constantly capturing screenshots every few minutes has raised privacy concerns, Microsoft has assured users that all processing occurs on-device and that no data leaves their computers. To address these concerns further, Windows 11 allows users to specify which apps should never be snapshotted or to disable the feature altogether.
Recall will soon be available as part of the upcoming Windows 11 version 24H2. Currently, the software is undergoing public testing in the Release Preview Channel, marking the last stage before its public release. With the successful backporting of Recall onto low-end Windows on ARM devices, the anticipation for its official release is only heightened.
As technology enthusiasts continue to push boundaries, finding innovative ways to bring new features to existing hardware, the Windows 11 Recall feature stands as a testament to their determination and creativity.
