In a tragic turn of events, an eight-year-old boy from Kentucky lost his life last month due to a fentanyl overdose, contrary to initial beliefs that he had a severe allergic reaction from consuming strawberries. The authorities confirmed this revelation earlier this week.
The incident took place in Madisonville, where the boy's family had informed the police that they suspected an allergic reaction and rushed him to a hospital after noticing a rash on his body. However, subsequent investigations revealed that the boy had succumbed to "fentanyl intoxication," leading to a manslaughter charge against 33-year-old Antonio M. Person.
Person, who had been residing in the same house as the boy, was found to have fentanyl in his possession, as stated in a police report from Madisonville. Though the specific relationship between Person and the boy was not elaborated upon, Person had already been charged with drug trafficking and illegal gun possession in March after a search of the residence following the boy's demise.
The family's attempt to alleviate the boy's symptoms by administering Benadryl and giving him a bath did not yield positive results, according to the Madisonville Police. They sought medical attention at the emergency room but eventually brought him back home after a few hours. Unfortunately, the boy passed away the following morning on March 15.
The incident also raised concerns about a potential link between the boy's tragic death and strawberries sold at a high school fundraiser. As a precaution, the county's health department issued an advisory instructing individuals to dispose of the fruit. However, on Tuesday, the Hopkins County health department announced that testing conducted by the Food and Drug Administration concluded that the strawberries were safe for consumption.
Antonio M. Person is presently detained at the Hopkins County Jail on a substantial $1 million bond due to the manslaughter charge he is facing.
This devastating incident serves as a reminder of the dangers of fentanyl, a powerful opioid, and highlights the importance of ensuring its safe and responsible handling. The community mourns the loss of the young boy and hopes that the legal process will bring justice to the situation.
