A concerning E. Coli outbreak has been traced back to organic carrots, impacting at least 39 individuals across 18 states, including California. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) identified the source as multiple carrot brands supplied by Grimmway Farms based in Bakersfield. These brands have since been recalled.
Despite the recall, the CDC warns that these contaminated carrots might still be present in homes. The affected carrot brands include 365, Bunny Luv, Cal-Organic, Compliments, Full Circle, Good & Gather, GreenWise, Grimmway Farms, Marketside, Nature’s Promise, O-Organic, President’s Choice, Raley’s, Simple Truth, Sprouts, Trader Joe’s, Wegmans, and Wholesome Pantry.
Specific products recalled are baby organic carrots with best-if-used-by dates from September 11, 2024, to November 12, 2024. Whole organic carrots without "best-if-used-by" dates were also recalled and were available in stores from August 14, 2024, through October 23, 2024.
Of the 39 confirmed E. Coli cases, three patients are from California. The outbreak has led to 15 hospitalizations and one fatal case reported in California. According to the CDC, typical symptoms from E. Coli ingestion include severe stomach cramps, diarrhea (often bloody), and vomiting, usually appearing three to four days post-consumption.
