An E. coli outbreak in St. Louis County, Missouri, linked to events catered by Andre's Banquets and Catering, has risen to 106 cases, with two individuals developing a severe complication, according to health officials. The St. Louis County Health Department is investigating several events catered by the company between November 6 and 9, which include two school band gatherings, two funerals, and a veterans event.

More than half of the reported cases are associated with Rockwood Summit High School. On Thursday, the health department disclosed that hospitals had reported two individuals developing hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a rare but serious condition that can be a consequence of an E. coli infection. This syndrome, which often affects the kidneys and the blood clotting system, can result in kidney failure. While anyone can develop HUS, it is more common in children; prompt medical intervention often leads to full recovery.

Three parents of Rockwood Summit High School students have filed lawsuits against Andre's Banquets and Catering. Additionally, an adult attendee who tested positive for E. coli after eating at one of the events has also filed a lawsuit.

Health department officials revealed on Tuesday that all five events under investigation featured salads provided by the catering company, which were consumed by those who fell ill. Consequently, state health workers removed salads from Andre's South venue on Telegraph Road on Monday, with test results expected by the end of the week.

John Armengol Jr., the owner of Andre's Banquets and Catering, has maintained that his business did not cause the outbreak. He stated that all of his employees have been tested and cleared of E. coli. Armengol mentioned that he plans to provide a further statement once the results of the lettuce tests are available. The company has been cooperating with the health department's investigation throughout the process.
