Rap superstar Drake's opulent Toronto mansion, known as The Embassy, has fallen victim to severe flooding caused by record-breaking storms that hit the city. The artist shared shocking footage on Instagram, revealing ankle-deep muddy water rushing into a section of his home.
According to Environment Canada, Tuesday's torrential downpour brought nearly 100mm (four inches) of rainfall, surpassing a daily record that had remained unbroken since 1941. As a result, the city's power grid operator, Toronto Hydro, reported that approximately 167,000 customers were left without electricity.
Emergency services were inundated with distress calls as numerous individuals were trapped in elevators due to the power outages. Additionally, rescue operations were required to save motorists stranded on flooded highways.
David Phillips, a senior climatologist at Environment and Climate Change Canada, revealed that multiple storms had occurred back-to-back, resembling a parade of jumbo jets on an airport tarmac. He highlighted the concerning shift towards urban flooding, stating, "This is the new reality. It used to be river flooding, now it is urban flooding."
Drake's 50,000 sq ft mansion, located in Toronto's exclusive Bridle Path area, has recently been the target of several incidents following the rapper's widely-publicized feud with Kendrick Lamar. While no specific motive has been ascribed, these incidents coincided with Lamar using an aerial image of Drake's mansion as the artwork for his hit diss track, "Not Like Us." The track soared to the top of the U.S. charts, signaling the intensity of the feud as serious allegations were exchanged between the two artists, including claims of underage sex and adultery.
In a 2020 interview with Architectural Digest, Drake described The Embassy as a masterpiece of overwhelming high luxury. The rapper emphasized his desire for the structure to stand for a century, a timeless and strong monument that he would leave behind in his hometown. Unfortunately, the recent floods have put this vision to the test, leaving Drake's mansion in need of significant restoration work.
As climate change continues to impact cities around the world, incidents like this serve as a stark reminder of the vulnerability of even the most lavish properties to the forces of nature. Drake's mansion, which once showcased grandeur and sophistication, now stands as a symbol of the harsh realities brought upon by extreme weather events.
