Miami Dolphins defensive end Trenton "Trent" Phillips and tight end Eric Fortson have been making progress in their respective recoveries, according to recent practice reports.
Phillips, who has been nursing a knee injury, has been participating in individual pass rush drills and even took part in walkthrough speed 11-on-11 drills during practice. Although his participation in the upcoming season opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars remains uncertain, it is expected that he may be limited to a snap count, potentially playing around 35-40 snaps per game.
Meanwhile, Fortson has been seen doing rehabilitation drills on the side during practice, indicating that he might be falling behind in the tight end battle due to his absence from practices. With tight ends Durham Smythe, Smith, and Hill all expected to make the 53-man roster, it seems unlikely that the Dolphins would carry four tight ends on their roster.
Safety Jordan Poyer, who is recovering from a thumb injury, has been seen running hard during practice, suggesting that his return is imminent.
Referees were present at practice on Wednesday, a welcome sight after being absent on Monday and Tuesday. Their presence indicates that the Dolphins are preparing for the upcoming season with a focus on ensuring compliance with league rules and regulations.
Cornerback Cam Smith, who is recovering from an undisclosed injury, was seen doing rehabilitation work on the side during practice but was later seen participating with the first-team defense in 11-on-11 drills. Smith made an impact with a tackle for a loss on a swing pass to running back De'Von Achane, showcasing his ability to contribute even while managing his injury.
Edge rusher Emmanuel Ogbah has been consistently performing well during practice, solidifying his position as a potential opening-day starter. He recorded a tackle for a loss on an Achane run, further demonstrating his prowess on the defensive line.
Defensive lineman Brandon Pili had a standout performance during practice, recording a sack and a tackle for a loss. Pili, an undrafted rookie from USC, has been making strides recently and has a chance to make the Dolphins' rotation, especially with the recent release of defensive lineman Teair Tart. However, Pili's strength lies in physical play, which can be challenging to evaluate during non-contact practices, making the upcoming joint practice and preseason game crucial for his evaluation.
Cornerback Siran Neal had a momentary setback when he was flagged for pass interference during practice. Neal has shown inconsistency during camp, excelling at times and giving up plays at others. Despite his ups and downs, Neal is considered a lock for the Dolphins' 53-man roster due to his exceptional performance on special teams.
Running back Jaylen Wright showcased his agility and quickness with a nice cutback on an 8- or 10-yard gain up the middle, demonstrating his potential as a valuable addition to the Dolphins' backfield.
Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa had a missed opportunity during practice when he failed to connect with running back De'Von Achane on an open play due to a defensive bust. Tagovailoa instead completed a short pass to tight end Mike Gesicki, highlighting the importance of communication and execution within the offense.
Undrafted rookie linebacker David Anenih made an impressive play, batting down a Tagovailoa pass during practice. Anenih has been making a strong impression during recent practices, showcasing his potential as a valuable addition to the Dolphins' defense.
Defensive lineman Zach Sieler continued his outstanding camp performance by breaking through the middle for a sack on Tagovailoa. Sieler has been consistently dominating during practice, solidifying his position as a key contributor on the Dolphins' defensive line.
Cornerback Isaiah Johnson had a notable performance during practice, breaking up back-to-back passes by quarterback Mike White. Johnson demonstrated his coverage skills by deflecting a pass intended for wide receiver Kyric McGowan and later breaking up another pass intended for Braylon Sanders, showcasing his ability to make impact plays on defense.
The Dolphins are gearing up for a joint practice with the Washington Commanders on Thursday, marking their final practice open to the public before their preseason game at Hard Rock Stadium on Saturday at 7 p.m.
