Injuries continue to plague the Arizona Diamondbacks' pitching staff, as the team faces multiple setbacks in their rotation. The latest blow came when starter Ryne Nelson was placed on the 15-day injured list due to a right elbow contusion sustained during a game against the San Francisco Giants on Thursday.

Nelson's injury adds to the list of key pitchers currently sidelined for the Diamondbacks. Eduardo Rodriguez, who is dealing with a left shoulder issue, remains on the 60-day injured list and is not eligible to return until late May at the earliest. Additionally, closer Paul Sewald is progressing in his rehab from an oblique injury and recently faced live hitters as part of his recovery process.

Meanwhile, the Diamondbacks made a roster move on Wednesday by optioning starter Tommy Henry. To fill the vacant spot, the team recalled Luis Cecconi, who had previously competed for a rotation spot during spring training. Cecconi showcased his skills in a recent game against the Salt Lake Bees, pitching six innings and allowing just one earned run to secure a victory.

Cecconi, a promising talent drafted by the Diamondbacks in 2020, gained his first major league experience last season. Despite a minor blip where he gave up six runs against the Orioles on September 2, Cecconi proved himself as a reliable spot starter and bulk innings reliever during critical moments of the season. Reflecting on his debut, Cecconi expressed gratitude for the opportunity to compete at the highest level and acknowledged how the experience played a significant role in his development.

In addition to Cecconi, the Diamondbacks also recalled Yoan Martinez on Wednesday. Martinez made two appearances for the team before being optioned back to the minors. In his limited time on the mound, the 22-year-old showed promise, recording 3.0 scoreless innings while striking out two batters and issuing four walks, three of which occurred in his last outing during the Diamondbacks' dominant 17-1 victory over the Giants.

As the team navigates through these pitching injuries, the Diamondbacks' rotation for the upcoming games begins to take shape. Brandon Pfaadt is set to start on Monday, while Tuesday's spot is still undetermined. On Wednesday, Jordan Montgomery will take the mound as the Diamondbacks face off against the St. Louis Cardinals.

The Diamondbacks remain hopeful that the return of their injured pitchers and the contributions of promising young talents like Cecconi and Martinez will bring stability to their rotation as the season progresses.
