**Detroit Lions Boost Defense with Acquisition of Za'Darius Smith**

The Detroit Lions have made a significant move to enhance their defensive line by trading for Cleveland Browns' defensive end Za'Darius Smith. This news broke while Lions head coach Dan Campbell was live on the local radio show "Costa & Jansen with Heather" on 97.1 The Ticket, making it a dynamic moment he couldn't fully address at the time. "Well, Ian's [Rapoport] got all the answers, doesn't he?" Campbell joked, acknowledging the premature news leak.

Later that evening, after the Lions officially announced the trade, Campbell shared his thoughts in an interview with Dan Miller on FOX 2 Detroit. Campbell expressed optimism about the acquisition, highlighting Smith's qualities. "He brings an element of toughness, smart football player, can set an edge, can get an edge in rush, close the pocket down," he said. "He's just a really good complementary piece that I think is going to work well with our guys."

The trade discussions reportedly started as early as Week 7, following the injury to standout defensive edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson. Up until his injury, Hutchinson had delivered 7.5 sacks and led the NFL in pressures with 45, significantly fortifying Detroit's defensive capability. However, the team has struggled to maintain pressure on opposing quarterbacks since Hutchinson's injury. Only defensive lineman Josh Paschal managed to record a sack in the past three games, specifically against the Vikings.

Za'Darius Smith's stats with the Browns show promising potential for the Lions' defense. In nine games, Smith racked up five sacks, 27 pressures, and earned a 71.1 PFF pass rush grade. Campbell eagerly noted Smith's comprehensive skills. "He provides, really, a lot," Campbell said. "I feel like this guy's a total defensive end and certainly he can get to the quarterback."

The trade for Smith represents a strategic effort to fill the void left by Hutchinson and add depth and resilience to the Lions' defensive lineup. With his proven track record, Smith is expected to make significant contributions to the team's performance. The Lions' fan base and coaching staff await with keen anticipation to see the impact of this new addition in the upcoming games.
