In a dramatic turn of events, the defense team for Karen Read, who is charged with second-degree murder in the death of her boyfriend Boston police officer John O'Keefe, presented evidence from a federal expert on Tuesday. The expert's conclusion challenges the prosecution's claim that O'Keefe was hit by an SUV, adding a new layer of complexity to the case.

During a hearing at Norfolk Superior Court in Dedham, the defense motioned to dismiss the charges against Read and also sought the sanction and disqualification of the Norfolk District Attorney's office from the case, alleging prosecutorial misconduct. The defense further argued that Read is being framed and is a victim of a cover-up.

Defense attorney Alan Jackson revealed that the U.S. Attorney's office, in February, provided over 3,000 pages of documents related to their investigation, which included information about federal investigators hiring a reconstruction expert. These independent experts, three PhDs, conducted a detailed analysis of whether Read's SUV made contact with O'Keefe.

"Their conclusion, to a person, was his injuries were inconsistent with the damage on the car. The damage on the car was inconsistent with having made contact with John O'Keefe's body. In other words, the car didn't hit him, and he wasn't hit by the car," Jackson stated in court.

The defense further claimed that personal relationships between individuals living at the scene of the crime and responding police officers compromised the integrity of the case. However, prosecutor Adam Lally dismissed these allegations as "defense by obfuscation", labeling it as a "three-card monte card trick."

Lally staunchly defended the overwhelming evidence presented to the grand jury, which included testimony from 42 witnesses, 56 exhibits, and over 1,400 pages of transcripts. According to Lally, this evidence clearly indicates that Karen Read was responsible for the death of John O'Keefe.

The judge presiding over the case has yet to make a ruling on the defense motions, taking all arguments under advisement. The outcome of these motions will undoubtedly have a significant impact on the trajectory of the trial and the fate of Karen Read.

As the legal battle continues, the defense team's revelation of the federal expert's findings adds a new dimension to the case. The question of whether O'Keefe was actually hit by Read's SUV will require careful consideration by the court, as both the defense and the prosecution present their respective interpretations of the evidence.

As the trial unfolds, the truth surrounding John O'Keefe's untimely death hangs in the balance, leaving both the courtroom and the community on edge.
