In a tragic incident that occurred on November 9, 2023, at Burke Street Pub in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, three individuals fell ill after consuming poison-contaminated beer. The North Carolina Office of the Chief Medical Examiner has recently released its report on the death of one of those affected, Connor Owen Sebastian, a 31-year-old resident of Winston-Salem.

According to the medical examiner's office, Sebastian passed away on November 30, 2023, as a result of "chronic alcoholism," with "hepatitis C" listed as a contributing condition. The report indicated that he had initially sought medical attention on November 10, 2023, with a "caustic esophageal injury" but was discharged from the hospital three days later.

Caustic liquid ingestion, which occurs when liquids such as cleaners are accidentally ingested, often leads to tissue damage and scarring in the esophagus. The severity of the injury depends on the extent of damage to the esophageal wall. Sebastian fell ill on November 16, 2023, seven days after the poisoning incident, experiencing hematemesis, or vomiting blood, indicating a potential upper gastrointestinal bleed. He was subsequently admitted to the TICU at a hospital and was likely in alcohol withdrawal.

The medical examiner's report disclosed that Sebastian had a history of alcohol and substance abuse, having previously reported consuming at least 12 drinks a day in 2021, accompanied by daily episodes of vomiting blood. A CT scan conducted at that time had revealed suspected cirrhosis, a condition in which the liver is permanently damaged and replaced by scar tissue.

Cirrhosis can be caused by factors such as alcohol-associated liver disease, chronic hepatitis C, and chronic hepatitis B, as defined by the National Institute of Health (NIH).

The poisoning incident at Burke Street Pub, where cleaner was left in the beer lines, affected three individuals, with Sebastian being the only fatality. The exact circumstances leading to the contamination are currently under investigation.

This incident serves as a tragic reminder of the potential dangers associated with negligence in the food and beverage industry. Authorities and concerned agencies are expected to take appropriate measures to prevent similar incidents from happening in the future, ensuring the safety and well-being of the general public.

As the investigation into this case continues, friends and family members of Connor Owen Sebastian mourn his untimely demise and urge for thorough accountability in order to prevent such catastrophes from occurring again in the future.
