21-year-old Akili McDowell, known for his role in the television series David Makes Man, has been charged with the murder of a man in a Houston parking lot. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene, and McDowell was arrested less than two weeks later, with Harris County Jail records indicating that he was booked on 2 August on a $400,000 bond.
Interestingly, McDowell was also booked the day before on a theft charge and is scheduled to appear in court on 6 August for this case. According to Law&Crime, this theft charge is connected to a misdemeanor incident in July 2023, where McDowell allegedly stole a pair of headphones. The report further mentions that he was "charged with murder while on bond for theft," as stated in the charging documents.
No details about the relationship between McDowell and the deceased have been revealed yet, leaving it unclear what motivated the alleged crime. McDowell's manager, Jonell Whitt, expressed her concern, labeling the situation as "unfortunate" and adding that her thoughts and prayers are with McDowell and those affected by the tragedy.
McDowell, who gained recognition at the young age of 15 for his leading role in the coming-of-age drama series David Makes Man, is now scheduled to appear in court on 10 September to face the murder charge. The series follows his character, a teenage prodigy living in the South Florida projects but attending a magnet school for academically gifted students. McDowell's co-stars in the series include Nathaniel Logan McIntyre, Alana Arenas, and Kwame Patterson.
Before his breakthrough role, McDowell made his on-screen TV debut with two episodes of The Astronaut Wives Club in 2015. He has also made minor appearances in shows like Billions and I Am Athlete.
As this case unfolds, McDowell's fans and the entertainment community await further updates and hope for a fair and just legal process for all parties involved.
