The Cowboys' defense, already struggling this season, faces additional challenges as they prepare to take on the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday. With newly appointed defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer at the helm, the team ranks 26th in total defense and 31st in scoring defense. Their run defense has been particularly problematic, tying with the Carolina Panthers for the most rushing yards allowed per game in the NFL at 154.6 yards. Additionally, their pass defense hasn't fared much better, sitting at 20th in the league with 218.0 yards allowed per game.
The potential absence of key players further compounds the Cowboys' issues. Star cornerback Trevon Diggs may be unavailable for the game against quarterback Kirk Cousins and his Falcons, which could spell disaster for Dallas' secondary. Even though they activated cornerback DaRon Bland from injured reserve, Bland hasn't practiced on Wednesday or Thursday due to a foot injury he is still recovering from.
Bland’s previous season was stellar, earning him Pro Bowl honors and a First Team All-Pro designation after leading the league with nine interceptions and setting an NFL record with five pick-sixes. His absence, along with Diggs', would leave a significant void in the Cowboys' defensive lineup. Coupled with cornerback Amani Oruwariye being placed on injured reserve this week, the Dallas secondary is looking exceptionally thin.
Faced with this shortage, the Cowboys might have to depend on C.J. Goodwin, Andrew Booth, and rookie fifth-round pick Caelen Carson as their primary options at cornerback. Such a scenario could make for a tough outing against the Falcons' potent offense. The Cowboys' defensive unit must quickly adapt and find ways to plug the gaps if they hope to avoid another disappointing performance.
