D.C. United's long-serving captain, Steven Birnbaum, has announced his retirement from professional soccer at the age of 33. Birnbaum, who has spent 11 seasons in Major League Soccer (MLS), cited persistent injuries that will require knee and hip replacements as the primary reason for his decision.

Throughout his career, Birnbaum has been a resilient figure, having navigated through injuries, missed playoffs, and coaching changes. However, this year proved to be the breaking point for him. The center back, known for his strong defensive abilities, expressed his determination to play until the wheels fall off, but unfortunately, that moment has arrived.

Birnbaum's injuries have not only affected his ability to continue playing soccer but also his daily life, making it challenging for him to keep up with his wife and two young children. The pain he endured following matches and practices became increasingly difficult to bear.

Despite having options to prolong his career, Birnbaum realized about six weeks ago that he had reached the end. After making his sixth appearance of the year, he experienced significant discomfort and found it difficult to even walk down the stairs from the field. This moment was when he knew he had to prioritize his long-term health and well-being.

Having made 275 appearances for D.C. United, Birnbaum leaves a notable legacy, ranking third on the team's all-time list. He played in eight playoff games and represented the team in the 2016 MLS All-Star Game. Additionally, Birnbaum enjoyed a stint with the U.S. national team, making 11 appearances, including starts in two World Cup qualifiers and being part of the 2016 Copa América squad.

D.C. United acknowledges Birnbaum's contributions and will honor him during Saturday's home friendly match against Scottish champion Celtic. United's chief executive, Jason Levien, commended Birnbaum for his growth as a player and a person over the past 11 years, recognizing him as both a reliable defender and an exceptional leader in the community.

Reflecting on his career, Birnbaum highlighted several cherished memories, including his U.S. national team debut and scoring a goal against Iceland. He also fondly recalled facing Lionel Messi and Argentina in the 2016 Copa América semifinals and being part of Audi Field's groundbreaking and inaugural match alongside Wayne Rooney, with whom he formed a close friendship.

As Birnbaum embarks on the next chapter of his life, he plans to prioritize spending time with his family and ensuring his physical and mental well-being. While it may have come earlier than expected, Birnbaum is grateful and ready for whatever lies ahead.
