In preparation for today's double-header, the Chicago Cubs have made a couple of roster moves, with the potential for an additional move between games if necessary. The team has announced that Luke Little will be placed on the injured list (IL) due to a shoulder issue, currently being called a "strain." As a replacement, Ethan Roberts has been called back up to join the bullpen.

The news of Little's injury comes after he left last night's game early due to the shoulder problem. While this is unfortunate news for the Cubs, the silver lining is that they will have an extra fresh arm available with Roberts joining the bullpen.

Javier Assad is another player making a return for the Cubs. However, his return is somewhat atypical. Assad has been named the 27th man for today's double-header. On days with double-headers, teams are allowed to have an extra player, and in this case, Assad will be returning from the IL to start in tonight's second game.

The decision to name Assad the 27th man and add Roberts as a replacement for Little allows the Cubs to keep the possibility of bringing in another pitcher for the second game. By doing so, the team remains flexible and can make a pitching swap if needed. If Roberts, or any other optionable player, is heavily utilized in the first game, the Cubs can then swap him out for someone like Daniel Palencia to have a fresh arm for the second game.

It is important to note that while this option is available, it does not necessarily mean it will be exercised. However, it indicates that the Cubs have planned for various scenarios and are prepared to make adjustments as needed. The team may already have another reliever on standby or en route to St. Louis to ensure they have enough pitching options for tonight's game.

As the double-header unfolds, Cubs fans will be keeping a close eye on the pitching staff and any potential changes that may occur between games. This strategic move by the Cubs demonstrates their commitment to maintaining a strong bullpen and maximizing their chances of success in both games.

Only time will tell if the Cubs opt to make another pitching swap, but their preparedness and flexibility give them an advantage as they face off against the St. Louis Cardinals today.
