### Vigil Held in Fredonia to Honor Local Nurse Practitioner Killed in Budapest
Fredonia, N.Y. — On Saturday evening, the Fredonia community came together in a touching candlelight vigil to remember Mackenzie "Kenzie" Michalski, a 31-year-old nurse practitioner who tragically lost her life while on vacation in Budapest, Hungary. Michalski, originally hailing from Fredonia, was honored by family, friends, and community members who gathered at Barker Commons to mourn her loss.
Melissa Pietrkiewicz, a close friend of Michalski's mother Jill, spearheaded the organization of the vigil within hours. “I hope that people here leave in a little bit of peace, knowing that if they need to grieve with other people, there are people available to grieve with them,” Pietrkiewicz remarked, emphasizing the communal support available during this difficult time.
The event highlighted Fredonia's tightly-knit community spirit. “That’s what this is all about, you know—a small community where we look out for one another, we love one another, and we grieve with one another when it’s necessary,” said Fredonia Mayor Michael Ferguson.
The vigil, which commenced at 6 p.m., invited attendees to bring candles and share their love. “Bring your candle. Bring your love. We will continue to hold the light as we honor Kenzie and her beautiful light that she shared with so many," read a message from the organizers on Facebook. This gathering served as a testament to Michalski's impact on her community and the enduring bond amongst its members.
