Indianapolis Colts' defensive end, Samson Ebukam, will miss the upcoming season due to a torn Achilles tendon, a team source has confirmed. The unfortunate injury occurred during Sunday's practice, dealing a significant blow to the Colts' stacked defensive line.

Ebukam had an impressive performance in 2023, leading the team with 9.5 sacks, a career high for the veteran player who was entering his eighth season. He also recorded three forced fumbles, the most on the team, and ranked second in quarterback hits with 17, just behind three-time Pro Bowl selection DeForest Buckner.

The news of Ebukam's injury was initially reported by NFL Network, leaving the Colts without their returning sack leader. Despite this setback, the team has been confident in their deep defensive line, considering it one of the strengths of their veteran roster. However, replacing Ebukam's valuable production will be a challenge.

Rookie Laiatu Latu, the 15th overall pick and the first defensive player selected in this year's draft, is expected to be greatly impacted by Ebukam's injury. Latu, a former standout player from UCLA, has been primarily working with the second defensive unit during the early training camp practices. With Ebukam's absence, Latu will likely see increased playing time and greater responsibility.

In addition to Latu, veterans Dayo Odeyingbo and Kwity Paye will also be relied upon to step up in the absence of Ebukam. Odeyingbo and Paye collectively amassed an impressive 16.5 sacks in the 2023 season, making them valuable assets to the Colts' defensive line.

The Colts will have to reassess their defensive strategies and find ways to fill the void left by Ebukam's absence. With a promising roster and solid depth, the team remains optimistic about their overall defensive capabilities heading into the season, despite this unfortunate setback.

As Ebukam faces a lengthy rehabilitation process and the team prepares for the challenges ahead, the Colts will need to rely on the strength of their collective defensive effort to maintain their competitiveness in the upcoming season.
