The incident occurred on a noncontact play as Watson attempted to advance the ball right after the two-minute warning, resulting in his leg hyperextending.
Following the play, Watson immediately dropped to the ground and made no attempt to continue, a clear sign of the severity of his injury. The scene turned somber as a cart was swiftly brought onto the field to carry away an emotional Watson. His teammates and the entire Browns sideline gathered around in a show of solidarity as Watson was placed on the cart.
The Browns wasted no time in ruling Watson out for the remainder of the game. With Jameis Winston designated as inactive and serving as the emergency third quarterback, it fell upon Dorian Thompson-Robinson to step in for Watson.
Sunday’s game marked a continuation of a challenging season for Watson, who is in his third season with the Browns. Prior to his injury, he had completed 15 of 17 passes for 128 yards. Despite these promising stats, Watson has been struggling this season, recording the lowest QBR among all qualified passers.
The Browns now face the daunting task of adjusting their strategy and recovering from this critical setback as they look ahead to the remainder of the season.
