In a disappointing setback for the Cincinnati Bengals, offensive tackle D'Ante Smith is set to miss the upcoming season following a patellar tendon injury. The news was confirmed by a source familiar with the situation, who spoke to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler. Smith sustained the injury during a joint practice session with the Chicago Bears on Thursday. MRI results are expected to provide further clarity on the extent of the injury.
Smith isn't the only Bengals player to suffer a patellar injury during the joint practice. Running back Chris Evans also fell victim to a torn patellar tendon, ensuring that he too will be sidelined for the entire season. This double blow has left the Bengals' offensive line depth significantly depleted.
The absence of Smith will place added pressure on rookie Amarius Mims, the team's first-round pick this year. Unfortunately, Mims will also be out of action for several weeks due to a strained pectoral muscle, further thinning the Bengals' options on the offensive line. The team had hoped that veteran Trent Brown would provide some stability, but he was forced to step out during Thursday's joint practice due to back tightness, according to Bengals coach Zac Taylor.
As a result of these injuries, the Bengals face an uphill battle to maintain a strong and healthy offensive line for the upcoming season. It remains to be seen how the team will adjust and fill the void left by Smith and Evans. Despite this setback, the Bengals will continue their preparations for the preseason, with a joint practice scheduled against the Indianapolis Colts next week, followed by their final preseason game on Thursday.
In the meantime, the team has made the decision not to play their starters in Saturday's preseason matchup against the Chicago Bears. This cautious approach aims to prioritize player safety and avoid further setbacks as they head into the regular season.
