In a shocking announcement, Cincinnati Bengals' center Billy Price has decided to retire from the National Football League (NFL) at the young age of 29. Price cited a recent health scare as the reason for his early retirement, stating that it would be unsafe for him to continue playing.
Taking to social media, Price shared his experiences and expressed his gratitude for being alive. The center revealed that he had undergone emergency pulmonary embolism surgery on April 24th to remove a saddle clot that was entering both of his lungs. This unprovoked occurrence, with no clear medical explanation, left Price feeling terrified, especially given his young and previously healthy condition.
Unfortunately, the risk of an internal bleed while on blood thinners outweighed the possibility of returning to the field for Price. Recognizing the potential dangers, he made the difficult decision to retire from the NFL. Disappointed but grateful for his experiences, Price expressed his deep appreciation for the opportunities he had to play in some of the greatest atmospheres around the world.
Price's football career was notable even before he entered the NFL. As the recipient of the Rimington Trophy, awarded to the best center in college football, he showcased his talent during his time at Ohio State in 2017. Drafted in the first round by the Bengals in 2018, Price played for the team for three years before moving on to play for the New York Giants for a single season.
Following his stint with the Giants, Price had brief stints with the Las Vegas Raiders, Arizona Cardinals, New Orleans Saints, and Dallas Cowboys. Despite the ups and downs throughout his professional career, Price had the opportunity to train and play alongside exceptional athletes, many of whom have gone on to achieve Pro Bowl selections, All-Pro recognition, and even Hall of Fame inductions.
Price's decision to retire may come as a surprise to fans and the football community alike. However, his health and well-being must take precedence, demonstrating his courage and self-awareness in putting his safety first. Billy Price leaves the NFL after making a significant impact during his time with the Bengals and having the opportunity to showcase his talent with multiple teams.
The football world will undoubtedly miss his skill and presence on the field, but the most important thing is that Price is now able to focus on his recovery and well-being. We wish him all the best in his future endeavors and hope that he continues to inspire others with his resilience and determination.
