In a recent interview with PEOPLE, Chris Evans, the beloved Marvel star known for his role as Captain America, revealed his experience with making a surprise cameo in the highly anticipated film, Deadpool & Wolverine. Evans discussed his decision to accept Ryan Reynolds' invitation to reprise the role of Johnny Storm, the Human Torch from the Fantastic Four franchise.
According to Evans, the invitation came a couple of years ago when Reynolds, a close friend, approached him with the idea. Evans shared, "He just said, 'Listen, if you don't like this idea, no worries whatsoever. But I have something that could really bring the house down and would let you play a character from your past.'"
Having previously worked with Reynolds on the film Free Guy, Evans expressed his trust in the actor and his eagerness to collaborate once again. "I mean, honestly, I would do anything Ryan asked," Evans said. "He gave me a great cameo in Free Guy already, and I just trust him completely. So the chance to be Johnny again, I couldn't pass up."
Evans admitted that he loved every aspect of the experience, from shooting the scenes to watching the final product. Emphasizing the freedom he had in delivering his lines, Evans shared a conversation he had with Reynolds regarding the monologue. "Ryan was like, 'Listen, if we need cue cards...'," Evans recalled. "And I was like, 'Cue cards? I'm showing up off book. I don't get to say dialogue like this. Trust me. I'm going to enjoy every second of this. Memorized.'"
Although Evans is primarily recognized for his portrayal of Captain America, his surprise appearance as the Human Torch stirred excitement among fans. Not only did audiences hear him utter the iconic "Flame on!" catchphrase, but they were also stunned to hear the actor known for his clean-cut superhero image deliver a monologue filled with expletives and sexual innuendo.
Evans' journey as the Human Torch started back in 2005 when he starred in Fantastic Four and its 2007 sequel, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer. The cast, including actors Ioan Gruffudd, Jessica Alba, and Michael Chiklis, made two movies together before Fox's unsuccessful reboot in later years.
With the upcoming MCU film, The Fantastic Four: First Steps, on the horizon, Stranger Things star Joseph Quinn reflected on the opportunity to portray Johnny Storm. Quinn expressed his admiration for Chris Evans' previous performance in the role, stating, "I remember really enjoying Chris Evans's performance as Johnny in the previous films, and it felt like this would be a really exciting opportunity; I was absolutely signed up."
Quinn acknowledged the challenge of stepping into the character's shoes but emphasized his intention to make it his own. "No," he replied when asked if Evans' portrayal influenced his audition. "I mean, you're going to make it your own. It's big boots to fill," Quinn added.
As fans eagerly await the release of Deadpool & Wolverine and anticipate the upcoming Fantastic Four reboot, it's clear that Chris Evans' surprise cameo has sparked intrigue and excitement among both Marvel enthusiasts and general audiences alike.
