Authorities in Texas have released the findings of their investigation into the drowning death of Angela Chao, CEO of Foremost Group. Chao tragically died after accidentally driving her Tesla into a pond at a ranch she co-owned with her husband, venture capitalist Jim Breyer. The police report indicates that Chao was intoxicated at the time of the incident, with a blood-alcohol concentration of .233, nearly three times the legal limit in Texas.

Chao, 50, was the sister-in-law of Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and the sister of former Cabinet secretary Elaine Chao. The report reveals the frantic but unsuccessful attempts made by friends and rescue workers to rescue Chao from the submerged vehicle. Chao had made an emotional eight-minute phone call to a friend as water entered her car, stating that she was unable to escape and that the water was rising. She expressed her love to her friend before the vehicle went underwater.

The accident occurred late on the night of February 10 at the ranch in Johnson City, where Chao had hosted a dinner with seven close friends, some of whom were Harvard Business School alumni. Chao was driving back to the main house when her Tesla went into the water after she accidentally put the car into reverse, causing it to go over a limestone block wall.

Following the accident, Texas Rangers and FBI agents conducted an investigation and concluded that the incident was an unfortunate accident. They reviewed photos, videos, and reports from the scene before reaching this determination. The family spokesperson for Angela's father, James Chao, expressed deep grief over the tragedy and gratitude for the efforts of first responders and friends who tried to rescue her.

Angela Chao became CEO of Foremost Group in 2018, a company founded by her father in 1964. She held board positions on various prestigious organizations, including the American Bureau of Shipping Council, Harvard Business School's Board of Dean's Advisors, and the Metropolitan Opera in New York.

This heartbreaking incident has also had an impact on Senate Minority Leader McConnell, who announced his decision to step down from his leadership position. In a statement on the Senate floor, McConnell cited Angela Chao's death as one of the reasons for his decision, acknowledging the difficult time his family has been going through.

The tragic accident serves as a reminder of the importance of responsible driving and the dangers of driving under the influence. It is a devastating loss for Chao's family, friends, and the business community, as she was known for her contributions and involvement in various organizations.
