Cameron Young made history on the PGA Tour as he became the 13th player to shoot a sub-60 round. With a par save from just inside 10 feet on the final hole, Young secured a remarkable score of 59 and climbed to a share of the lead.
Getting off to a dream start, Young went 5 under in his first four holes, displaying exceptional form. He continued to excel, adding a couple more birdies before a standout performance on the par-4 15th. His eagle shot propelled him to an impressive 13 under, placing Young in contention for the top spot.
As Young approached the par-4 17th, he delivered another incredible shot, landing his approach just 5 feet away from the hole. With composure, Young sealed a birdie, pushing his total to 11 under and confirming his pursuit of a sub-60 round. A par on the last hole would result in a score of 59, while another birdie could potentially place him in the elite 58 club alongside Jim Furyk.
Young's chances at achieving his sub-60 goal were boosted by his exceptional play on the par-4 15th, where he struck a remarkable tee shot just outside of 4 feet. He converted the eagle, ascending to 12 under and only one stroke behind the leader, Tom Kim, who has yet to tee off.
Although Young's remarkable performance stole the headlines, Collin Morikawa's solid play should not be overlooked. With seven birdies and flawless play on Friday, Morikawa maintained his momentum and finished with a solid score of 63. Despite ranking in the middle of the pack for strokes gained approach, Morikawa's consistent performance sets him up as a contender if his irons improve even further.
Young's scorching start saw him turn in a 7-under score of 28 for the first nine holes. Currently in a share of 6th place at 9 under, he now sets his sights on joining the prestigious sub-60 club, which includes Jim Furyk's historic 58 in the 2016 Travelers tournament.
While accuracy has been the key for Tom Kim and Collin Morikawa, both ranking high in driving accuracy, they have fallen behind in terms of distance. However, Akshay Bhatia has matched their accuracy and added an extra dimension with increased distance, making him a formidable opponent as he enters the third round, trailing Kim by two strokes at 11 under.
Scottie Scheffler, the world No. 1, may not have dazzled with flashy plays, but his consistent performance has been effective. A birdie on his final hole on Friday propelled him to 11 under, just two strokes behind his birthday twin, Tom Kim. With improvements in his game from tee-to-green, Scheffler remains a strong contender.
As the tournament heads into the weekend, Tom Kim holds a two-stroke lead, propelled by his impressive bogey-free rounds of 62 and 65. With an outstanding ranking in driving accuracy, strokes gained tee to green, and strokes gained putting, Kim is poised to maintain his lead and fend off the chasing pack.
Cameron Young's exceptional round of 59 has undoubtedly injected excitement into the Travelers tournament. With his sights set on joining the sub-60 club, Young's performance demonstrates the incredible talent and competitiveness found on the PGA Tour.
