Calgary Couple Leverages TikTok to Raise Funds for Brain Cancer Treatment

In a powerful display of love and determination, a Calgary couple, Geoff Boc and Lauren Anderson, has taken to TikTok to raise funds for life-changing treatment for Geoff's brain cancer. Their heartfelt videos not only capture their love story but also serve as a call to action for support. Despite facing a difficult diagnosis, the couple remains steadfast in their pursuit of hope and a brighter future.

Geoff's journey began in October 2022, shortly after he and Lauren moved in together. Lauren noticed significant changes in Geoff's behavior, including severe forgetfulness and constant headaches. Concerned, they visited the emergency room at Peter Lougheed Centre, where a CAT scan revealed a massive tumor in Geoff's brain. Further tests at Foothills Medical Centre confirmed he had a grade 3 anaplastic astrocytoma, a rare and challenging form of brain cancer.

Geoff's devastating prognosis, given just three months to live without intervention and potentially 18 months with surgery, shook the couple to their core. Determined to fight for their future together, they embarked on an arduous journey of treatment, starting with a nine-hour awake brain surgery to remove 99 percent of the tumor in November 2022.

Dr. Rolando Del Maestro, an expert in Neuro-Oncology, explained the importance of awake surgeries in cases where tumors are in close proximity to vital brain functions. Despite the discomfort of the procedure, Geoff's recovery was painful but successful. However, their joy was short-lived as the tumor returned by June 2023, leading to escalated chemotherapy and the uncertainty of further surgeries.

Geoff's unwavering spirit and support from loved ones, particularly his parents, allowed him to endure the physical and emotional toll of battling brain cancer. However, the couple faced financial obstacles when they discovered potential treatment options in the United States, specifically clinical trials involving CAR T-cell therapy, which targets and kills cancer cells.

To overcome the financial barrier, Lauren's sister, Alida, initiated a GoFundMe campaign and joined forces with Geoff and Lauren to share their story on TikTok. The couple's vulnerability and determination struck a chord with viewers worldwide, resulting in over 1.5 million views and $81,000 raised towards their $200,000 goal.

Despite the challenges, the couple remains grateful for the overwhelming support they've received and the sense of community that has formed around them. In a recent update, they shared their intention to apply for trials in North Carolina and Houston, with consultation fees alone amounting to $29,000 USD.

Geoff and Lauren's story serves as a reminder that love and hope can persevere even in the face of adversity. Their determination to create a future together and fulfill their dreams of marriage and completing school is an inspiration to many. As they navigate this difficult journey, the couple remains optimistic, holding onto the belief that miracles do happen.
