The Atlanta Braves suffered a major setback on Saturday as their star pitcher, Spencer Strider, underwent an MRI exam that revealed damage to the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow, according to an announcement by the team. Strider, who was last year's MLB leader in wins and strikeouts, will be further evaluated by Dr. Keith Meister in Arlington, Texas.
Concerns arose on Friday when Strider left his start early in the Braves' home-opening extra innings victory over the Diamondbacks, citing discomfort in his right elbow. The 25-year-old All-Star only lasted four innings, giving up five runs on seven hits and three walks, while recording four strikeouts.
Braves manager Brian Snitker expressed his initial belief that it was just an off night for Strider, saying, "I thought it was just one of those nights. Then he came in and was complaining about his elbow... He was uncomfortable with how it was feeling."
This marks only the eighth time in Strider's 54 big league starts that he has had to leave the game after four innings. Additionally, it is the sixth time he has failed to record at least five strikeouts during a start.
The extent of Strider's absence from the Braves' rotation is yet to be determined, but it is undoubtedly a significant blow for the team. Currently sitting atop the National League East with a 4-2 record, the Braves will need to find a solution to fill the void left by Strider's absence.
Before the injury, Strider made two starts for the Braves this season. He kicked off the year by pitching on Opening Day against the Phillies, throwing 90 pitches across five innings, giving up two runs on three hits and two walks.
As the evaluation process continues, the Braves will anxiously await further updates on the condition of their All-Star pitcher.
