**Holiday Box Office Boom: 'Moana 2,' 'Wicked,' and 'Gladiator II' Spark Cinema Comeback**
After several challenging years, the movie industry is experiencing a rejuvenation this holiday season. Three major releases, Disney Animation's "Moana 2," Universal's "Wicked," and Paramount's "Gladiator II," are driving audiences back to theaters in significant numbers.
"Moana 2," originally developed as a television series for Disney+ before being transformed into a theatrical feature, has proven to be an irresistible draw. The sequel brought in an impressive $57.5 million on its opening Wednesday and is projected to collect at least $175 million over its first five days, with some estimates reaching as high as $200 million. If these numbers hold, "Moana 2" will surpass the previous Thanksgiving record holders, "Frozen II" and "Hunger Games: Catching Fire." Currently, it ranks as the third biggest opening day for an animated film, just behind "Incredibles 2" and "Inside Out 2," and has garnered $66.3 million worldwide. Despite its lukewarm 67% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, audiences awarded the film an A- CinemaScore, driven by the passionate fanbase of the original 2018 film.
Universal's "Wicked," a lavish adaptation of the Broadway hit, has also captured the public's interest. Starring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande as Elphaba and Galinda respectively, the film earned $20.4 million on its first day and is set to gross over $97 million across the five-day holiday stretch. With an extensive promotional campaign, including collaborations with Starbucks, nail polish brands, and Lego, "Wicked" aims to become a cultural phenomenon. By the week's end, it is expected to bring in over $240 million domestically, setting a promising debut for the first installment of its two-part saga.
Meanwhile, "Gladiator II," Paramount’s follow-up to the 2000 classic, featuring Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal, and Denzel Washington, generated $6.6 million on Wednesday. The film is projected to earn $40 million over the five-day period and conclude the holiday week with a total exceeding $107 million domestically. Despite setbacks from last year's Hollywood strikes, the production, which boasts a hefty $250 million budget, is drawing significant interest.
This confluence of high-profile releases indicates a positive shift for the exhibition industry, which has been grappling with the fallout from the pandemic and subsequent industry strikes. Together, "Moana 2," "Wicked," and "Gladiator II" are propelling the holiday box office to a potential $315 million haul, potentially setting a new record and offering a glimpse of a box office renaissance.
