Beware of Scammers Selling Fake Eclipse Glasses, Warns Pennsylvania Attorney General

In anticipation of the upcoming Total Solar Eclipse, people across the country are eagerly trying to find reputable sellers of eclipse glasses. However, in their desperation to secure a pair, many individuals are falling prey to scams. The Pennsylvania Attorney General's Office has issued an alert, cautioning the public about scammers attempting to deceive unsuspecting buyers.

CBS News reported that scammers are taking advantage of the high demand for eclipse glasses, flooding the market with counterfeit products. Caitlin Driscoll from the Better Business Bureau of Western Pennsylvania emphasized that rare events like the solar eclipse often attract scammers looking to capitalize on people's excitement.

To avoid becoming a victim, Driscoll advised people to be cautious of advertisements on social media and instead seek out trusted sellers. She specifically mentioned the American Astronomical Society's list of approved sellers as a reliable source. The society has also warned about the influx of fake glasses flooding the market, which do not offer adequate eye protection.

Interestingly, it was revealed that NASA does not approve or endorse eclipse glasses. Therefore, individuals should be wary of scams claiming NASA's endorsement. Driscoll urged consumers to exercise caution when purchasing from unfamiliar sellers or online marketplaces, even if they claim to source their products from an AAS-approved supplier.

Pennsylvania Attorney General Michelle Henry, in a statement, stressed the importance of conducting thorough research before making a purchase. She urged the public to buy glasses that are certified safe for viewing the eclipse, ensuring that their eyes are properly protected.
