In an interview with MrMattyPlays, Todd Howard, the director and executive producer at Bethesda, discussed the future of the Fallout franchise, revealing that there are no immediate plans to release a new mainline Fallout game. Howard expressed the company's commitment to delivering a quality game rather than rushing a release.

With the success of the TV adaptation of Fallout sparking a renewed interest in the Fallout video games, Bethesda has enjoyed a prosperous year in 2024. The recently greenlit second season of Fallout has only increased the anticipation for Fallout 5. However, despite this, Howard made it clear that Bethesda is not in a hurry to produce the next installment.

Howard acknowledged the ongoing popularity of Fallout 76, which recently received new downloadable content (DLC). He stated that the company aims to bring the franchise back in a more meaningful way and that rushing through future Fallout projects or diverting resources from Fallout 76 is not a priority at the moment.

While discussing the Fallout TV show, Howard recognized its unique storytelling and niche appeal within the franchise. He emphasized the desire for a new kind of mainline single-player game but emphasized that such projects require time to ensure they meet the high expectations of fans. Howard believes it is acceptable for people to miss things from the franchise and stressed the importance of getting everything right in terms of both the Fallout, Elder Scrolls, and Starfield franchises.

Though Bethesda has plans for new Fallout games, Howard previously mentioned that fans can expect a wait of approximately "five-ish years" for their release. Additionally, Howard revealed that the company currently has no intentions of bringing modernized versions of Fallout 1 and 2 to consoles.

Looking beyond the Fallout franchise, Howard discussed Bethesda's plans for Starfield, a highly anticipated space-based game. He disclosed that the company intends to release annual expansions for Starfield, which will unravel some of the game's biggest mysteries. The first expansion, titled Shattered Space, is set to launch later this year. Howard expressed the company's desire to support the game for a long time and continually add new experiences and tones.

The recent June update for Starfield introduced new missions and a bounty-scanning mechanic. Bethesda also opened up the Starfield Creation Kit to all modders, providing them with more opportunities to enhance the game's experience. However, some players expressed dissatisfaction over the price of accessing the new Track Alliance missions, which cost $7.

Bethesda's commitment to delivering high-quality experiences in their beloved franchises reflects their dedication to the core fanbase. While the wait for the next mainline Fallout game may still be years away, fans can look forward to continuing adventures in Fallout 76 and unraveling mysteries in Starfield's upcoming expansions.
