Bengals Defensive End Cam Sample Out for Season With Achilles Injury
CINCINNATI - The Cincinnati Bengals will face a major setback in their defensive line this season as defensive end Cam Sample is set to miss the entire season due to a torn Achilles, confirmed by head coach Zac Taylor on Monday. The unfortunate incident occurred during Friday's practice when Sample went down towards the end and had to be carted off the field.
Sample, a fourth-year player hailing from Tulane, had played a significant role for the Bengals in the previous year. In 2023, he made two starts and appeared in all 17 games, demonstrating his versatility on the field. During that time, Sample accumulated 29 total tackles and 1.5 sacks.
Speaking at a news conference on Tuesday, Coach Taylor expressed his disappointment about the injury and acknowledged Sample's contribution to the team. "Cam's been a huge part of our team," said Taylor. "He played various roles and has been an asset in the locker room. We will provide him with all the support he needs during his recovery, and we plan on having him around the team."
The exact timeframe for Sample's surgery has yet to be determined, but his absence will undoubtedly create a void in the Bengals' defensive lineup. Additionally, the team is currently dealing with injuries to two other defensive ends, including both starters.
Trey Hendrickson, who suffered a bruised chest on the first day of practice, has been sidelined ever since. Sam Hubbard is also facing a hyperextended left knee, leaving both players in a week-to-week evaluation.
The Bengals' coaching staff will now need to implement a strategy to fill the void left by Sample's injury and address the challenges posed by the absence of their key defensive players. The hunt for suitable replacements and adjustments to the defensive scheme will be crucial as the team prepares for the upcoming season.
The loss of Cam Sample will undoubtedly be felt by the Bengals, both on and off the field. However, the team remains determined to overcome this setback and hopes for a swift recovery for their injured defensive end.
