In the Cincinnati Bengals' first Organized Team Activities (OTA) practice, head coach Zac Taylor addressed the absence of star receivers Tee Higgins and Ja'Marr Chase. Taylor expressed his confidence in their commitment to the team and downplayed any concerns about their non-participation in drills.
Higgins, who has yet to sign the franchise tag placed on him in February, and Chase, who has not participated in the team's offseason program, were not present during the voluntary workouts. However, Taylor emphasized that their absence should not hinder the team's offensive development.
During a press conference, Taylor highlighted the voluntary nature of the workouts and assured that both Higgins and Chase are working hard elsewhere. He expressed his belief in their dedication to the team, stating, "The beauty is we know those guys, we know what they're about and that they'll be ready and focused when it's time to come back."
In addition to the receivers, defensive tackle Sheldon Rankins and projected starting right tackle Trent Brown were also absent from the practice. Both players were notable additions during free agency. However, Taylor remained optimistic and stated that their knowledge of the playbook and their experience as veterans will put them in a good position when they return.
The Bengals are aiming to bounce back from a disappointing season in which they missed the playoffs following quarterback Joe Burrow's season-ending wrist injury. Burrow has been actively participating in the team's offseason program and received praise from Taylor for his accuracy, timing, velocity, and power during Tuesday's practice.
The OTAs will continue through Thursday and resume from June 3 to June 6. The team's offseason program will conclude with a mandatory minicamp scheduled for June 11 to June 13. The focus will be on building team chemistry and preparing for the upcoming season as the Bengals aim to return to their successful form and make a postseason push once again.
