**Beloved Broadcast Dog Ben, Kirk Herbstreit’s Golden Retriever, Passes Away at 10**
Kirk Herbstreit’s cherished golden retriever, Ben, known for his charming appearances during college football and NFL broadcasts, died on Thursday at age 10. Ben had been a favorite among sports fans due to his frequent guest spots at stadiums and on live TV, where he provided emotional support and levity amidst the intense world of sports commentary.
Ben was diagnosed with leukemia and lymphoma in March, and despite undergoing treatment, the cancer had spread throughout his organs, leading to his passing. Herbstreit, an analyst for ESPN and Amazon Prime NFL, shared the heartbreaking news on social media, expressing his deep affection for Ben: "I've had dogs my whole life but Ben was one of a kind. He was smart, loving, gentle, patient, inquisitive, and welcoming to all. Always a big smile and a soft tail wag."
Ben's journey in the limelight began in November 2021 on the set of ESPN's "College GameDay" at the University of Cincinnati. Living in Cincinnati made it easy for Ben to join the local show, marking his first major appearance during the Bearcats' game against Tulsa. Ben quickly became a beloved fixture, accompanying Herbstreit on numerous journeys, including a trip to Seattle earlier that same year.
In December 2023, Herbstreit detailed to The Athletic how Ben provided him with comfort during a particularly challenging period, including his son Zak's hospitalization with a heart condition. The emotional support Ben offered was invaluable, creating a unique bond between the dog and the sports analyst.
Ben's popularity led to numerous honorary NFL and college football credentials. This season alone, the Atlanta Falcons named him "Wide Retriever" for a Week 5 game, the Miami Dolphins dubbed him the "Chief Happiness Officer of Football" in Week 2, and Penn State crowned him "Treat Analyst" for the "GameDay" show prior to the Penn State - Ohio State match.
Despite a successful surgery to remove two cancerous masses in July, Ben's health continued to decline. In September, Herbstreit updated fans on Ben’s recovery and his ability to travel once more. Ben even made a memorable appearance on ESPN's pregame broadcast of the LSU-USC game in Las Vegas, where his wagging tail was seen between Herbstreit and co-analyst Rece Davis.
Ben underwent a second chemotherapy injection on October 23 but weakened significantly, losing the use of his back legs. Herbstreit sought holistic treatment involving a three-day Vitamin C IV, though it ultimately wasn't enough to save his loyal companion. "I'm so thankful for ALL the love so many have shown him over the last couple years," Herbstreit wrote. "One of the hardest things I've gone through in my life. Ben is my best friend and companion. I love him with all of my heart."
The passing of Ben marks the end of a heartwarming chapter for sports fans and Herbstreit’s family, reminding us of the profound impact our furry friends can have on our lives.
