In a bid to bolster their defensive line, the Chicago Bears have made consecutive trades for two talented linemen. The team announced on Saturday that they have acquired defensive tackle Chris Williams from the Cleveland Browns, in exchange for a sixth-round draft pick and a seventh-round pick. This move comes just a day after the Bears traded for defensive end Darrell Taylor from the Seattle Seahawks.
The addition of Chris Williams brings much-needed depth to the Bears' interior line, especially with the uncertain status of Zacch Pickens. Pickens, who left practice early last week and has not participated in team drills since, was expected to be a rotational player on the interior line this season. With limited options available, options such as fourth-year player Byron Cowart, second-year player Michael Dwumfour, and a trio of rookie undrafted free agents (UDFAs) in Jaylon Hutchings, Dashaun Mallory, and Keith Randolph Jr., it remains to be seen who will secure a spot on the 53-man roster as the team cuts down to 90 players.
Chris Williams, now entering his third season in the NFL, may not have extensive playing experience, having participated in only 13 games with 107 defensive snaps. However, he does bring familiarity with head coach Matt Eberflus from their time together in Indianapolis, where Eberflus served as the Colts' defensive coordinator. In 2020, Williams was an undrafted free agent who spent the season on the practice squad before making the Colts' team in 2021. Although he did not see any game action last season, he did undergo training camp with the Kansas City Chiefs.
With six tackles and one QB hit to his name, Williams has shown glimpses of his potential during his limited game time. The Bears will be hoping that he can make an impact and contribute to their defensive efforts this season. The acquisitions of both Williams and Taylor demonstrate the team's commitment to reinforcing their defensive line ahead of the upcoming season.
As the Bears continuously make moves to strengthen their defensive unit, fans will eagerly anticipate how these new additions will shape the team's performance on the field. The upcoming 53-man roster cuts will shed more light on which players will secure their spots and contribute to the Bears' defensive prowess in the 2022 season.
