Austrian flight #OS434, operated by an Airbus A320 (registration OE-LBM), encountered a harrowing experience on Sunday, June 9, 2024. The flight, which departed Palma De Mallorca at 15:55 CEST bound for Vienna, was struck by a powerful hailstorm, causing significant damage to the aircraft.

As the flight ascended to 34,000 feet over the Mediterranean Sea, the intense hailstorm battered the aircraft, resulting in severe damage to the nose radome and the weather radar system. Additionally, the hail caused the windscreen to crack, further heightening the distressing situation.

Passenger Jon McGregor captured the aftermath of the incident in a social media post, sharing images of the damaged cockpit nose and shattered front windows of the aircraft. McGregor expressed relief that despite the frightening ordeal, everyone on board managed to touch the ground safely.

Flight #OS434, which had been in service for 23 years, belongs to Austrian Airlines (AUA). The airline is yet to provide an official statement regarding the incident and the subsequent impact on the flight's operations. However, the passengers onboard the flight expressed their gratitude for a safe landing and commended the crew for their professionalism during the challenging circumstances.

The extent of the damage caused by the hailstorm remains unknown, and it is expected that Austrian Airlines will thoroughly assess the aircraft to determine the necessary repairs and whether any disruptions to future flights will occur as a result.

Passengers and aviation enthusiasts are reminded that severe weather conditions can pose significant challenges to flights, and airline operators closely monitor atmospheric changes to ensure passenger safety. It serves as a reminder that even the most routine journeys can encounter unforeseen circumstances, emphasizing the importance of a skilled and experienced flight crew.

As investigations into the incident continue, passengers and industry observers eagerly await updates from Austrian Airlines regarding the aftermath and any potential measures taken to prevent similar incidents in the future.
