In a harrowing incident just days before the Paris Olympics 2024, a shocking act of violence unfolded in the city's northern Pigalle district. A 25-year-old Australian tourist sought refuge in a kebab shop after being brutally attacked by a gang of five men in the early hours of the morning.

Security footage captured the heart-stopping moment when the alleged gang rapist approached the victim inside the Dounia kebab shop. Despite the woman's plea for help from other customers, the assailant audaciously patted her on the shoulder before casually ordering food. Disturbingly, the victim later identified him as one of her attackers.

However, one diner, seen wearing a black t-shirt, stepped in to confront the alleged rapist, taking a swing at him. The altercation was soon broken up by staff members, prompting the alleged suspect to leave the restaurant. Throughout the incident, staff and patrons provided comfort and support to the distraught victim until the arrival of the police, who promptly interviewed her and took her to Bichat hospital.

French authorities have launched a major investigation into this brazen attack, which has sent shockwaves throughout the nation. The CCTV footage is expected to be critical evidence as investigators work diligently to apprehend the perpetrators responsible for this heinous crime.

The Australian Embassy in Paris has been in contact with French authorities and is providing consular assistance to the victim. The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade stands ready to support her during this difficult time.

Parisian police are determined to ensure the safety and security of tourists visiting the city for the Olympics. A heightened police presence, along with the deployment of aerial units and a defense system comprising of 45,000 police officers from 43 countries and 18,000 soldiers, aims to maintain a secure environment for all attendees.

Unfortunately, this incident is not an isolated one in the French capital. Recent months have seen a string of rapes, including attacks during a street music festival and a horrifying assault on a 12-year-old girl. The Paris Prosecutor's Office has committed to thoroughly investigate these cases, with a focus on utilizing CCTV footage and other technical evidence to identify the individuals involved.

As the investigation into the gang rape unfolds, the victim, despite planning to return home to Australia, has chosen to remain in Paris to aid the authorities. Meanwhile, Paris prepares to host the Olympic Games, with the city's boulevards adorned with metal barriers and armed guards patrolling the streets to ensure the safety of residents and visitors alike.

The Paris Olympics 2024 Opening Ceremony is scheduled to take place by the River Seine on Friday, July 26. Despite this unfortunate incident, Paris is determined to showcase the spirit of unity, athleticism, and celebration as it welcomes athletes and spectators from around the world.
