In a flurry of roster moves, the Houston Astros are set to recall veteran first baseman José Abreu from Triple-A, while the Washington Nationals are ready to activate right fielder Lane Thomas from the injured list. However, the Seattle Mariners face concerns as second baseman Jorge Polanco will undergo an MRI for his right hamstring tightness.

Abreu, a former AL MVP, had a rough start to the season, with a batting average of just .099 in 22 games. As a result, he agreed to be optioned to the Astros' spring training facility to work on his swing. After showing improvement during his time there, Abreu himself announced his recall, which was later confirmed by manager Joe Espada. Abreu expressed gratitude for the opportunity to clear his head and fix his swing during his stint at the facility.

Thomas, on the other hand, has been sidelined since April 23 due to a left knee sprain. Although he struggled at the plate before his injury, hitting just .184, the Nationals are eager to have him back on the active roster. The 28-year-old outfielder was the team's most productive player in 2023, displaying his power and speed with 28 home runs and 20 stolen bases. Even if he continues to struggle offensively, Thomas is expected to make an impact with his elite speed and strong arm in right field.

Meanwhile, the Mariners face concerns over Polanco, who will undergo an MRI for his right hamstring tightness. The 30-year-old had already missed seven games earlier this month due to a similar issue. Polanco, a consistent and productive hitter during his time with the Twins, has struggled in his first season with the Mariners, hitting just .195 with a 78 wRC+ in 46 games played. The team hopes that the MRI results will come back negative, and a few games off his feet might help Polanco clear his head and break out of his uncharacteristic slump.

The Astros, Nationals, and Mariners are all making strategic roster moves to address their respective challenges and strengthen their lineups. The returns of Abreu and Thomas bring added experience and offensive potential to their teams, while the Mariners hold their breath as they await the results of Polanco's MRI. Only time will tell how these roster changes will impact the teams' performances on the field.
