### Arthur Smith Addresses Speculation About North Carolina Coaching Position
Reports emerged on Wednesday indicating that Pittsburgh Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith is being considered for the head coach position at the University of North Carolina. Smith, who confirmed his communication with the university on Thursday, has expressed a strong attachment to his alma mater but remains dedicated to his current role.
Smith acknowledged his connection with North Carolina and reported that the school reached out with an initial inquiry following the firing of Mack Brown. However, he emphasized that his primary focus is on the Steelers' efforts to secure the AFC North title. "Obviously, that's your alma mater," Smith stated, according to Kevin Gorman of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. "That's not something I've thought about. Like a lot of these things go, I know in today's media things can blow up out of control. The reality is, reached out with a preliminary call. I appreciate it. Love that place but that's not my focus."
Having played as a guard at North Carolina and later serving as a graduate assistant, Smith transitioned to the NFL, building a reputable coaching career. Before joining the Steelers this season, he served as the head coach for the Falcons for three seasons. Despite the potential coaching opportunity at North Carolina, Smith remains resolute in his commitment to the Steelers for now.
This developing situation underscores the allure and challenge of returning to one’s roots while balancing professional obligations. Smith’s response suggests that, though flattered by the interest, his immediate responsibilities take precedence.
