In the world of mixed martial arts (MMA), Anthony Smith is not just a fighter anymore. With his transition into becoming one of the top analysts in MMA and a podcast host alongside UFC Hall of Famer Michael Bisping, Smith has embraced his additional role. However, being in the spotlight also means facing criticism and the occasional blowback for his opinions and predictions.
Smith, who is set to face Carlos Ulberg on short notice at UFC 303, understands the emotional side of being a fighter. In the past, he would feel personally attacked if someone picked against him in a fight. "Fighting used to be my identity," Smith confessed, acknowledging the attachment fighters have to their craft. "If you picked against me, I felt like you were attacking me personally, like my core of who I am as a person."
Over the years and through experience, Smith has learned to tune out some of the criticism directed towards him. As part of his job, he now offers his opinions on fights and fighters, knowing that disagreements will arise. He advises fighters to detach themselves from negative comments, urging them not to let it affect their day-to-day lives. However, he does acknowledge that fighters can be sensitive to what is being said about them.
During a recent trip to Las Vegas for UFC 300, Smith noticed some people eyeing him with anticipation, perhaps eager to challenge him for his opinions. Nonetheless, Smith takes it in stride and understands that differing opinions are part of the game. "Here's our f*cking chance. We're going to make him answer for that sh*t!" Smith said with a laugh.
With the insatiable appetite for content in today's fast-paced world, Smith acknowledges that his words might get misconstrued or taken out of context. He wishes that people would listen to his interviews or podcasts in their entirety to grasp his complete thoughts. Unfortunately, he knows that clickbait headlines can fuel controversy and upset fans.
Smith's recent comments about UFC light heavyweight champion Alex Pereira exemplify how statements can be misinterpreted. He clarifies that he believes Pereira is a highly effective fighter who is exceptionally powerful. Nevertheless, he knows that some people will only focus on fragments of his comments, distorting the intended meaning.
The criticism doesn't affect Smith too much personally. However, he notes that there might be consequences in the relationships he builds within the MMA community. "You don't really see a lot of those guys jumping at opportunities to hang go have dinner with Michael Bisping and me," Smith remarked.
As an analyst and podcast host, Smith straddles the line between being a fighter and working in the media. This dual role sometimes draws the ire of UFC CEO Dana White, who recently shared a video featuring influencers and personalities expressing doubts about UFC 300. Smith nervously watched the video, hoping to avoid being included among those who were critical. He realizes that his only potential criticism could have been his expectation of something more unexpected for the main event, but he emphasizes that he didn't express any negativity towards the card itself.
Anthony Smith continues to grow in his multifaceted role in the MMA world. While facing criticism and navigating through misunderstandings, he remains committed to providing honest and unfiltered opinions, even if they might not always please everyone.
