Anne Hathaway, the talented actress known for her versatile roles, recently opened up about the negative online backlash she faced after winning an Oscar and revealed how it affected her career opportunities. In a candid interview with Vanity Fair, Hathaway shared that the so-called "Hathahate" was so severe that it cost her potential roles in the film industry. However, she expressed immense gratitude towards filmmaker Christopher Nolan for standing by her side during this challenging time.
Hathaway described Nolan's unwavering support as instrumental in preserving her career trajectory. Despite the toxicity surrounding her online persona, Nolan cast her in the highly acclaimed 2014 space epic, "Interstellar," alongside Matthew McConaughey. Reflecting on her experience, Hathaway stated, "I had an angel in Christopher Nolan, who did not care about that [online hate] and gave me one of the most beautiful roles I've had in one of the best films that I've been a part of."
Interestingly, Hathaway had previously worked with Nolan in 2012's "The Dark Knight Rises" before the internet backlash intensified. Winning her first Oscar in 2013 for her role in "Les Miserables," Hathaway's increased visibility and her subsequent campaigning for the award season are believed to have triggered the online scorn. The wave of hate resulted in widespread mockery from various outlets, including The San Francisco Chronicle branding her as "the most annoying celebrity."
Hathaway acknowledged the humiliation she experienced during this period but emphasized the importance of not letting it hinder personal growth and artistic expression. "Humiliation is such a rough thing to go through. The key is to not let it close you down. You have to stay bold," she stated. The actress further added that remaining in a safe and unremarkable lane is not an option for actors.
While Hathaway has been recognized for her talents and versatility, it was Nolan's unwavering support that rescued her career from potential stagnation. With the upcoming release of "The Idea of You," a romance film inspired by One Direction, where she stars alongside Nicholas Galitzine, Hathaway is set to captivate audiences once again. The film is scheduled to premiere on Amazon Prime Video on May 2.
Christopher Nolan's faith in Anne Hathaway not only allowed her to bounce back from online criticism but also showcased her exceptional acting abilities to a wider audience. As Hathaway continues to thrive in her career, her resilience serves as an inspiration for others navigating through the challenges of the entertainment industry.
