### Alabama A&M Mourns the Loss of Linebacker Medrick Burnett Jr.

Tragedy has struck the Alabama A&M University community as linebacker Medrick Burnett Jr. succumbed to injuries sustained during the Magic City Classic game against Alabama State University. The 20-year-old athlete passed away on Tuesday evening, as confirmed by an official release from the university on Wednesday morning.

The university's Director of Athletics, Dr. Paul A. Bryant, expressed profound sorrow over Burnett's passing. "Today, our Bulldog family is heartbroken by the loss of Medrick Burnett Jr.," Dr. Bryant stated. He highlighted Burnett's exceptional character beyond his athletic prowess, emphasizing his positive energy, leadership, and compassion. These qualities, according to Dr. Bryant, left a lasting impact on everyone who knew him. "While words cannot adequately express our grief, we are humbled by the strength of his family, who stood by his side throughout this unimaginable ordeal," he added.

Extending heartfelt condolences and prayers, Dr. Bryant acknowledged the pain felt by Burnett's parents, siblings, and loved ones. He also expressed support for Burnett's teammates, coaches, and the entire Alabama A&M community during this difficult time. "In this moment of sorrow, we come together to honor Medrick's legacy and celebrate the light he brought to our lives. May we all draw strength from one another as we navigate this difficult time," Dr. Bryant said.

Medrick Burnett Jr. will be remembered fondly as a Bulldog with a resilient spirit that will continue to inspire. Originally hailing from Lakewood, California, Burnett was a redshirt freshman transfer from Grambling State University. His presence and contributions to the team left a significant mark on the Alabama A&M community.

A GoFundMe campaign initiated by Burnett’s sister, Dominece, had been set up earlier to support him following the severe injuries he received during the game on October 26, 2024. Dominece had described the severity of the incident and the critical condition of her brother in the campaign.

The university has announced that memorial service arrangements for Medrick Burnett Jr. will be made public in due course.
