In a sit-down interview with Robin Roberts on Good Morning America, actress Jenifer Lewis shared a harrowing incident from her trip to the Serengeti in Tanzania, where a fall off a hotel balcony left her immobilized and fearing for her life. Lewis, known for her role in the hit TV show Black-ish, had planned to retire and embark on a journey of travel and self-discovery after wrapping up the show and releasing a book.

Recalling the events that transpired in November 2022, Lewis described her first day at the resort in the Serengeti. Despite not being given a proper tour, she ventured out onto the balcony, desiring a closer look at the infinity pool at night. Tragically, she unknowingly stepped into an unmarked space that led to a 10-foot drop into a dry ravine filled with boulders and sharp rocks.

The impact was severe, with Lewis landing on her right hip and shoulder. The pain was unimaginable, and she felt as if a lightning bolt had struck her. In pitch darkness, unable to move, Lewis called out for her friend Lori, who was also on the trip. However, speaking or even taking a deep breath proved challenging due to her injuries.

Lori rushed to seek assistance, during which time Lewis was confronted with the sound of a lion's roar. In a moment of levity amid the dire situation, Lewis humorously remarked that her last thought was a headline that read, "The king ate the queen: Pieces of Jenifer Lewis' body being flown back to the states." Her resilience shone through as she recounted the terrifying ordeal.

Explaining why she chose to keep the incident private until now, Lewis revealed that she wanted to emerge victorious and show the world that she had "got back up" despite the setback. She had planned to share her fall and recovery journey on social media at the end of last year, with the support of Niecy Nash, who had tipped off Roberts about Lewis' intentions.

The full interview with Jenifer Lewis, conducted by Robin Roberts, will be aired on Tuesday night at 5:30 p.m. PT/8:30 p.m. ET on ABC News Live. Viewers can also catch the interview on Hulu later in the evening.

Lewis' story serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of life's challenges, and the strength and determination it takes to overcome them. Her resilience and humor in the face of adversity inspire us all.
