In the latest incident involving nonconsensual deepfake videos, actor Jacob Elordi, known for his roles in "Euphoria" and "Saltburn," has become a victim. According to NBC News, posts on X (formerly Twitter) containing a deepfake video of Elordi have garnered over 3 million views since late Monday.
The deepfakes of Elordi combine his face with explicit content taken from a male OnlyFans creator. However, the body in the video does not match Elordi's, as he has a distinctive birthmark on his chest. NBC News has identified the deepfake in more than 16 posts on X, with one post accumulating over 1.7 million views.
The OnlyFans creator featured in the original video has spoken out against the Elordi deepfake on his own X account, revealing that he was only 17 when the video was filmed. He expressed concerns, writing "that's literally my video" and stating that "deepfake is getting creepy." He also requested the deletion of several posts containing the deepfake. NBC News confirmed that the creator is currently 19 years old and resides in Brazil.
Of the 16 posts viewed by NBC, one had a content label indicating a violation of X's rules against abuse. Although the post could not be linked or shared, it still amassed 23,000 views.
This incident follows a trend in which high-profile women such as Taylor Swift, Megan Thee Stallion, and TikTok stars have been targeted with similar nonconsensual deepfake content on the platform. X has not responded to the request for comment by NBC News.
Deepfakes, referring to manipulated digital media created using artificial intelligence or technology, pose a significant threat, particularly when it comes to nonconsensual sexually explicit videos that replace a person's face in pornographic content. While federal and state legislation in the U.S. aims to combat this issue, the amount of such material online has significantly increased.
The availability of easy-to-use deepfake apps, which are advertised on social media platforms for creating nonconsensual sexually explicit deepfakes and even political deepfakes spreading election disinformation, has raised concerns about the potential interference in the 2024 elections.
Although nonconsensual sexually explicit deepfakes predominantly target prominent women and teenage girls, this incident involving a male celebrity highlights that anyone can become a victim. Elordi's representatives have not yet responded to the request for comment.
Some posts featuring the deepfake of Elordi presented the material as a "leak" or claimed it to be genuine footage of Elordi, while others identified it as a deepfake. Since April 2023, X has prohibited the sharing of synthetic, manipulated, or out-of-context media, as well as content that sexualizes individuals without their consent. X claims to proactively remove deepfakes, although it has been unsuccessful in preventing their spread, as seen in the case of the Elordi deepfake.
Furthermore, adult content creators have shared their struggles with thriving on X due to the proliferation of pornographic scams on the platform, as reported by NBC News in June.
