In a surprising turn of events, star quarterback Aaron Rodgers will not be participating in this week's mandatory minicamp for the New York Jets, according to coach Robert Saleh. Rodgers had informed the team ahead of time about his absence, citing an important personal event.

Rodgers did, however, attend the facility on Monday to complete his physical and fulfill photo day obligations. Despite his prior commitment, his absence from the minicamp is considered unexcused, leaving him subject to fines.

Coach Saleh confirmed that he had communicated with Rodgers before the start of organized team activities (OTAs) and praised the quarterback for being diligent in his communication. Although the absence is unexcused, Saleh acknowledged the importance of the event to Rodgers and respected his decision.

In addition to Rodgers, defensive end Haason Reddick was also absent from the minicamp. Reddick, who was acquired by the Jets in a trade with the Philadelphia Eagles in March, is believed to be seeking a new contract. Saleh revealed that he had spoken to Reddick over the weekend for the first time since the trade, but they did not discuss his holdout or contractual status.

While Saleh expressed appreciation for the dialogue with Reddick, he confirmed that the absence is unexcused. However, he emphasized that he is not concerned about Reddick's participation in training camp, as he believes the player will be ready to perform once the season begins.

Reddick, a two-time Pro Bowler, is currently under a three-year, $45 million contract that includes a projected payment of $21.8 million in 2024. Any further discussions regarding a new contract for Reddick are directed to general manager Joe Douglas, as the Jets had already engaged in conversations with Reddick's agents prior to the trade.

As the minicamp progresses without two key players, the Jets will now focus on utilizing the remaining roster to make progress in their preparations for the upcoming season. The absence of Rodgers and Reddick presents an opportunity for other players to showcase their skills and make a case for a larger role in the team's plans.

While questions regarding contracts and absences linger, the Jets' coaching staff remains committed to the development and success of the team as a whole. As the minicamp continues, the spotlight will shift to those players present as they strive to make an impact and bolster the Jets' chances for the upcoming season.
