**49ers Eye DeForest Buckner for Defensive Boost Ahead of Trade Deadline**
With the 2024 NFL trade deadline fast approaching, the San Francisco 49ers have made it clear where they need reinforcements: the defensive line. Although the team could benefit from depth at several positions, upgrading the defensive line would provide the most significant impact. San Francisco's defensive strategy heavily relies on active and disruptive play upfront, despite recent improvements in the secondary.
One potential target for the 49ers is their former first-round pick, DeForest Buckner, currently playing for the Indianapolis Colts. Buckner recently returned from injured reserve with a high ankle sprain, making his comeback in the Colts' Week 8 game against the Houston Texans. Despite his injury, Buckner remains a prime candidate for the 49ers, who are in desperate need of an interior lineman capable of both pressuring the quarterback and holding firm against the run.
Buckner has been one of the NFL’s most reliable players at his position, registering no fewer than 48 pressures in any season and recording at least 7.0 sacks per year since 2019. His familiarity with the 49ers, given that he spent the first four years of his career with them, would make for a seamless integration.
Financially, Buckner is contracted to the Colts for two years at $46 million, with $23 million guaranteed for the next year. The 49ers could manage this cap hit through restructuring his contract or proposing an extension to spread the cap hit across multiple seasons.
However, the Colts’ perspective complicates matters. At 4-4 heading into Week 9 and trailing the AFC South-leading Texans by two games, the Colts recently switched to veteran quarterback Joe Flacco in place of the struggling first-round pick Anthony Richardson. This move signals that Indianapolis is focused on winning now, which means they might be reluctant to trade away a crucial defensive asset like Buckner.
A game against the Minnesota Vikings before the trade deadline could be the tipping point. Should the Colts lose and consequently see their playoff hopes diminish, they might consider dealing Buckner to recoup future draft assets. An offer involving a third or fourth-round pick might be enough to bring Buckner back to San Francisco. A trade that, in hindsight, could rectify the initial mistake of parting ways with him and potentially turn around the 49ers' season.
